The Last Remnant (ラスト レムナント Rasuto Remunanto ) is a role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The game is directed at both Japanese and Western audiences and had a simultaneous release in Japan, North America and Europe, on November 20, 2008 for the Xbox 360.[5] The Microsoft Windows version of the game was released on March 20, 2009 in PAL territories[1] and March 24, 2009 in North America,[2] with a pending release April 9, 2009 in Japan.[3] A worldwide release on the Steam network is also scheduled for April 9, 2009.[4] The PlayStation 3 version of the game does not yet have a release date.[6]
The game is being directed by Hiroshi Takai and is the first Unreal Engine 3 game to be released by Square Enix.[7] It is intended by Square Enix president Yōichi Wada to "become a cornerstone for [their] worldwide strategy".[8] Art direction is being overseen by chief artist Kimihiko Miyamae and art producer Yusuke Naora. The game's soundtrack is composed by Tsuyoshi Sekito.[9]
Gameplay
The Last Remnant features a brand new battle system labelled by Hiroshi Takai (director) as a "Turn-based, command-based system using symbol encounters." There are no random encounters.[7] It also contains quick time events, sequences where the player must press a combination of buttons with a correct timing to defeat enemies.
In addition to the main character, the player's team (called a "Union") is composed of a number of soldiers whose skills vary according to different parameters. One parameter is the "morale" bar, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once and are at the core of the gameplay. Nobuyuki Ueda has commented on the battle system, claiming that it is "much deeper than the few seconds it received in the movie".[7] Additionally, a high number of quests are expected.[10]
Plot
The Last Remnant is set in a fictional world featuring a number of distinct humanoid races; the Mitras, most human in appearance, the Yamas, strong fish-like people, the Qsitis, small reptilians, and the Sovannis, feline people with four arms [11]. The story of the game revolves around "remnants", mysterious and coveted ancient artifacts of varying shapes and sizes which possess magic powers and which have been the cause of several wars throughout the game's history.[12][10] As Remnants come in varying forms, all cities throughout the world have one that their ruler is bound to that assist to govern and bring peace to their assigned realm.
For example, Athlum has the Valeria Heart; a gigantic sword set in the middle of the Town Square. It governs courage and gives all those it surrounds the strength to stand up for their rights. David, the ruler of Athlum also is bound to the Gae Bolg; a weapon Remnant that is shaped like a cannon and can deliver devastating effects on the battlefield.
Eight cities have been revealed for the world of The Last Remnant which are Athlum, Balterossa, Celepaleis, Royotia, Melphina, Nagapur, Baaluk, and Elysion. They all have their own monumental Remnants. The ending of the game is somewhat questioned on whether or not the protagonist, Rush Sykes, survived at the end of the game, but after the game's credits Rush is heard talking to someone (most likely The Conqueror); the dialog says: "What will you do now?" Rush answers with "What do you think, I'm going back, they're waiting for me," somewhat revealing that Rush survived at the end of the game, although the current location of Rush and The Conqueror is unknown (possibly due to the screen being pitch black). It has been speculated that this may be a setup for a sequel. [13]
Characters
These are the characters that appear in the game:
[edit] Rush Sykes
He is an 18-year-old swordsman and the main protagonist, who is designed primarily for fans of traditional Japanese role-playing games.[12] He was raised away from war in the peaceful Eulam Village. He is an affectionate young man who wears his heart on his sleeve, nothing matters more to him than his family - and thus he is dedicated to taking care of his sister. But when Irina is kidnapped, Rush finds himself involved in a global conflict centering around the Remnants while he tries to save her. He also has the power to call out to remnants, like his sister.
[edit] Irina Sykes
Rush's 14-year-old sister, who lives with Rush on idyllic Eulam Island. She is kidnapped by a mysterious group who are after the power (known as Marian's Gift) which rests within her which she has no understanding of. Irina seems like an average teenager but she is able to stay cheerful and upbeat even through the toughest of times.
[edit] David Nassau
David Nassau is the nineteen-year-old Marquee of Athlum. When he was young, he lost his mother; having Emma Honeywell be the maternal figure in his life. His mother kept a garden which his father had burnt down after her death, and eventually, David felt nothing but a deep hatred for the world. To his fortune, Emma came along and brought the charred garden back to life. The weapon he wields is called the "Gae Bolg", an enormous cannon. Despite being of royalty, he has decided to aid Rush in finding his sister, Irina Sykes. Though he is allied with the year-younger male, he has his own intentions, but promises to find Irina.
[edit] Emma Honeywell
One of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. She is the 41 year old silvery-haired matriarch of the Honeywell clan, a clan that has served Athlum for years. She is a brave warrior that leads troops into battle with courage and vigour. She is constantly trying to better herself and those around her, while continually striving for justice. Despite her stern exterior, she is a strong maternal figure to David, and looks after him as if he were her own. After David's mother died, his father burnt down her garden and Emma replanted it, and brought it back to life. During her rite of passage, she met Rush's mother Marina in the Numor Mines. Marina saved Emma from a monster which almost killed her.[16]
[edit] Emma "Emmy" Honeywell the Second
Emma's daughter who bears a striking resemblance to her. Although she is not as stern as her mother, she shares her maternal nature and looks out for Irina and Rush. She strives to become as great, if not better than her mother. Before Emmy joins the party, she travels the world, this is done by everyone in the Honeywell clan and is seen as their rite of passage into adulthood.
[edit] Blocter
One of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. He is 24 years old and is of the Yama race, which is a race of large, powerful fish-hybrid like people. Although he doesn't look it, Blocter is very kind-hearted. He and David grew up together, and Blocter constantly worries about the pressure put on David as the marquis. Blocter has vowed to spend his life working for David, who he considers his family. Being as young as he is, he tends to act impulsively. [17]
[edit] Pagus
The main voice of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. He is 55 years old and of the Qsiti race, a race of small, amphibian like beings. He excels at gathering information and is a historian by nature. He is generally calm and reserved, it takes a practiced eye to tell that he is also the generals' backbone. He spends his spare time paging through books and other materials. Sadly, few are eager to converse with him about the subjects he is most fond of. [17]
[edit] Torgal
The leader of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. Torgal is 200 years old and is of the Sovanni race - a race of four armed cat-like beings with an incredibly long lifespan. This race generally shuns outside contact making it unusual that Torgal would work for Athlum - especially in such a prominent position. His intelligence can make him seem slightly conniving. His past experiences have made him strong, but at the same time have left him emotionally detached from others. [17]
[edit] Antagonists
[edit] The Conqueror
He is an older man with long golden hair and crimson clothes, his origins are shrouded in mystery. He is designed to appeal to Western gamers and, in the original design of the game, was planned as a playable character with his own scenario[citation needed]. His ruthless nature is predicated in the garb he dons, as legend has it that its crimson hue is the splattered blood of his victims. The Conqueror is a collector of remnants; he is also linked to Rush, although the nature of this link is unknown.[17]
[edit] Roeas
A striking blonde woman who works for the Conqueror, she works alongside Castanea.[17]
[edit] Castanea
A giant of a man who wears heavy armour and wields a large hammer, he works for the Conqueror alongside Roeas.[17]
[edit] The Seven
A fearsome multiracial group serving the Conqueror. The Seven consists of an older Mitra man, a younger Mitra man, female Mitra twins, a Yama with an eyepatch, a Sovanni and a Qsiti.[17]. Each of them is a deadly warrior and owns a Remnant.
- Milton - An old Mitra man with long, silver hair. He is seen in the quest "The Wanderer" searching for a legendary sword before he is known as an enemy. He is rather sure of himself and owns the Remnant Wonder Bangle.
- Snievan the Aesthete - A white Sovanni who has a rather poetic manner of speech and a narcissistic, sadistic personality, thinking himself as the most beautiful being alive and that death is the only thing that can come close to him. He uses the Brionac, a Remnant that is four individual weapons that resemble long-barreled revolvers. He is seen in Elysion before he appears as an enemy. He is killed by Rush and the others in Base 1.
- Zuido the Fleshrender - A white Yama with an eyepatch and is huge even by his race's standards. He has a dual personality, one being child-like and the other being a foul-mouthed, violent brute. He wields the Remnant Obsidian which is a huge sword. He is seen in Ghor before he is known as an enemy and is killed by the party in Base 2.
- Ludope the Vengeful - A white Qsiti who is constantly haunted by the voices of his subordinates. He owns the ring-shaped Remnant Heartache. He is killed by the party in Base 3.
- Hinnah the Griefbringer - The white-haired Mitra twin. Unlike her sister, Hinnah has a foul mouth and doesn't hide her bloodlust.
- Hannah the Merciless - The black-haired Mitra twin. Hannah is well-spoken and polite, though deadly. Like her sister, she wields the katana Remnant Nightbloom
- Young the Belligerent - A young, cocky Mitra with a taste for battle. He wields the sword Remnant Frostblade.
[edit] Wagram
He is an old priestly man who is allied with Jager. Together they kidnapped Irina.[17]
[edit] Jager
He is a sinister man who plotted with Wagram to kidnap Irina. He also is a controller of a remnant-the Lob Omen[17]
[edit] Wilfred Hermeien
The Duke of Nagapur and also the chairman of the congress, technically making him the most powerful leader in the world.[12][10]
